Exhibition Lighting in the UK

Return to the summary page

Exhibition lighting can make a major contribution to the design of an exhibition space. The lighting plays a major role in attracting customers to the exhibition space as well as making the space a lively and interesting area once entered. If the lighting design is effective the design of the design of the space can be more minimal.

Although energy efficiency is not so important with exhibition lighting it should be considered in the design of the lighting. Metal halide and compact fluorescent are both very efficient, they are often used in conjunction with low voltage. Low voltage is still a major played in the exhibition lighting industry, metal halide light sources are now becoming cheaper and smaller. Metal halide produces less heat and consumes less power, requiring less cooling of the exhibition space. The total power draw is obviously a consideration requiring less connections costing the exhibitor less.

The colour of the light is also important within the lighting of exhibition spaces, both metal halide and fluorescent give the designer a great deal of flexibility in the ability to choose different lamp temperatures. The colour rendering is also good.

Higher end exhibition spaces in the UK tend will have more accent lighting to create drama, where as intermediate end will often look for an even light level within an exhibition environment. By using accent lighting the power consumption can be reduced, the eye notices the difference between light and dark better, so a well designed space can have a lower light level.

Cooler coloured lamps of 4000 degrees kelvin have better colour rendering properties, although we generally use warming lamps for exhibition lighting at about 3000 degrees kelvin
